SINGAPORE – Singapore Armed Forces opened up a six point lead at the top of the S-League standings after Aleksandar Duric scored twice to help the Warriors come from 2-0 down to defeat Balestier Khalsa 3-2.
Richard Bok’s side went into their 18th match of the current campaign buoyed by the fact that fellow AFC Cup 2008 quarter-finalists Home United had defeated second-place Super Reds 1-0 to give SAF a three-point lead over the Korean club.
However, SAF’s hopes of extending that advantage looked to have ended in the first-half of Thursday’s clash with Balestier at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium after Faizal Amir and Hironori Saruta scored in the 12th and 41st minutes respectively to give the visitors a two-goal cushion going into the break.
But Duric hit back two minutes into the second-half and after before John Wilkinson drew the Warriors level in the 77th minute the Bosnia-born goal-machine scored the winner with three minutes of the match remaining.
In Thursday’s other match Singapore international Mustafic Fahrudin scored a penalty in each half as Tampines Rovers defeated Woodlands Wellington 3-1.
Chinese striker Qiu Li opened the scoring in the seventh minute before the Serbia-born midfielder converted from the spot five minutes from the interval and again in the 77th minute to give the Stags a commanding three-goal league.
Woodland’s Korean forward Park Tae-won also scored from the penalty spot but his 86th minute goal was too little too late for Jorg Steinebrunner’s side, who now trail fourth-place Tampines by 12 points.
