| Eagles soar over Gombak |
SINGAPORE – AFC Cup 2004 semi-finalists Geylang United eased to a 3-1 win over Gombak United in their 2008 S-League round 18 clash on Friday.
Former Singapore international skipper Aide Iskander gave the Eagles a 19th minute lead before Brazilian striker Rivaldo Costa, who has had spells with clubs in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, doubled Geylang’s advantage four minutes later.
Gombak reduced the deficit ten minutes before the interval through Gabriel Oboatola but any hopes that the 2008 Singapore League Cup winners had of taking something from the match ended when they were reduced to nine men with the Nigerian striker red carded in the 62nd minute before being followed by team-mate Ruhaizad Ismail ten minutes later.
Geylang made their numerical advantage tell when Fazrul Nawaz scored his side’s third with eight minutes of the match remaining.
The victory lifted Geylang above Woodlands Wellington to fifth in the table, where they sit 23 points behind league leaders and 2008 AFC Cup quarter-finalists Singapore Armed Forces.
