MARSEILLE: The challenge of Asian teams ended on a poor note in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup on Tuesday after reigning continental champions UAE were drubbed by Russia 5-0 in a must-win match for the Gulf side while Japan lost to Spain 6-1.
UAE had to beat Russia to advance further into the tournament but despite their best attempts failed to score even a single goal against their strong rivals who were put on the scoreboard by Alexey Makarov, Egor Shaykov (two goals), Dmitry Shishin and Yury Gorchinskiy.
In the other match, Tomoya Uehara managed a consolatory goal for Japan while Amarelle (three), Nico, Cristian Torres and Javi Alvarez were on the mark for the Spaniards. Japan needed to win while hoping that Brazil would defeat Mexico in the other group match which, in the event, was won by the Brazilians 7-1.
Iran, the third Asian team in the fray, suffered a similar fate a day earlier and crashed out after losing all their three group matches.
