| Vietnam President Nguyen Minh Triet meets FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam. |
HANOI – Vietnam President Nguyen Minh Triet has paid tribute to the work of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in supporting the development of the game in the ASEAN country.
The Vietnamese premier, who met with FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and his AFC counterpart Mohamed bin Hammam on Friday, remarked:
“World football has seen tremendous development under the leadership of Mr Blatter and we are happy for his support to the development of Vietnamese football.
“We would like to speed up the development of Vietnamese football under the AFC leadership. I hope that Asian football will be able to compete with the rest of the world soon.”
Vietnam was a co-host of the 2007 AFC Asian Cup and the venue for the 2008 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and Blatter praised Minh Triet for his government's support to the Vietnam Football Federation.
"The VFF are working very hard for the development and with the support of you and your government, they will achieve results," he said.
"Vietnam have talent but need your help to create infrastructure. This will surely improve the level of football in this country. We (FIFA and AFC) can only offer help but you have to develop your own football."
"Football is not only about kicking a ball. Football touches all aspects of the society including cultural, social, emotional et al and this can be a national identity. You have to make football mirror of Vietnamese society," he told the VFF officials.
AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam thanked the FIFA chief for giving special attention to Asian countries.
"In Asia, we value your support and your third visit to this country is a testimony of your support to Asian football," he said.
The FIFA and AFC presidents were given a warm reception upon their arrival in Hanoi on Thursday when the Vietnam Football Federation hosted a dinner in their honour.
VFF President Nguyen Trong Hy, General Secretary Tran Quoc Tuan and other officials attended the function.
