TEHRAN: Defending champions Iran, Qatar and Syria made it to the semi-finals of West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship on Saturday.
Iran, who defeated Palestine 3-0 in the opener, qualified for the semi-finals, thanks to Qatar’s solitary goal victory over Palestine. Iran and Qatar will play on Monday to decide the group toppers. Fahd Al Shammari scored the match-winner for Jorge Fossati’s side in the 72nd minute.
Syria defeated Oman 2-1 to storm into the last four stage with four points. They were held goalless by Jordan in the opening match.
Muhannad Ibrahim drew the first blood for Syria in the 11th minute but Hashem Saleh leveled the scores for Claude Le Roy’s side two minutes into the restart. Mohammad Abbadi scored the winner for Syria in the 71st minute.
Oman will now have to beat Jordan on Monday to grab the fourth and final semi-final spot.
