LONG AN, Vietnam: Long An Provincial League champions Tan An Town ended their season with a defeat when they went down 2-1 to Can Giuoc District at home recently.
Tan An were assured the title because of their big lead over Can Duoc, who claimed second place after a 1-1 draw against visiting Ben Luc.
The champions finished on 54 points, with Can Duoc on 49, two points ahead of third-placed Moc Hoa, who beat Tan Tru 3-0 away in their final match.
The champions earn 40 million dong (US$2,400) for their efforts while Can Duoc take home 20 million dong (US$1,200).
The 14-team league is one of the main components of the Long An Project for Vision Vietnam, which is part of the AFC’s overall Vision Asia programme to improve the standard of football at all levels across Asia.
The tournament was organised by the Long An Province Football Association and comprised 14 amateur town and district teams in a double round-robin format.
As an amateur league, players should not have played for teams in the V-League, First Division, Second Division and National Cup from 1996 onwards.
