BAGHDAD: Former AFC Champions League side Al Quwa Al Jawiya grabbed the final semi-final spot in the Iraqi League with a thrilling 8-7 victory on penalties over Al Najaf on Monday.
Al Najaf needed just a draw going into the final game of the three-team playoff and Aqeel Mohammed gave them the lead in the tenth minute. Goals from Ahmed Ayad (48), Mohammad Hannon Mashkoor (72) helped Al Quwa Al Jawiya force an extra-time.
A Rafid Ibrahim strike in the 96th minute made it 3-1 for Al Quwa Al Jawiya and Hattam Saheb’s goal in the 115th minute for Al Najaf failed to stop the game go into the penalties which Al Quwa Al Jawiya eventually won 8-7.
They will now face defending champions Arbil in the semi-finals on August 21 while Al Zawra will take on Duhok in another semi-final a day earlier.
