WELLINGTON – Melbourne Victory recorded their first win of the 2008/09 A-League with a comfortable 4-2 triumph over Wellington Phoenix on Saturday.
Victory, who defeated the New Zealand-based outfit on penalties in the Pre-season Cup, were 2-1 up at the break thanks to goals on the in the 16th and 36th minutes from Danny Allsopp, who found the net either side of Shane Smeltz’s strike on the half-hour mark.
The visitors extended their lead two minutes after the interval through Brazilian striker Ney Fabiano – who was signed by Victory after impressing for Thai champions Chonburi during their group stage clashes in this year’s AFC Champions League – and while Smeltz reduced the deficit with a 64th minute penalty, Kevin Muscat scored from the spot just a minute later to restore Melbourne’s two-goal cushion.
