MELBOURNE – 2007/08 A-League champions Newcastle Jets were hammered 5-0 by Melbourne Victory on Friday as Ernie Merrick’s side extended their lead at the top of the standings.
Costa Rican midfielder Carlos Hernandez opened the scoring in the 41st minute before Archie Thompson doubled the Victory’s advantage on the stroke of half-time.
In form striker Danny Allsopp added a third on the hour-mark before the former Manchester City man took his personal tally to four goals in three games with the home side’s fourth four minutes later.
Former Scotland Under 21 midfielder Grant Brebner rounded off the victory with Melbourne’s fifth just before the final whistle.
