BAGHDAD: Brazilian Jorvan Vieira will return to Iraq, a year after leading the West Asian country to the historic AFC Asian Cup triumph.
The 55-year-old, who stepped down as coach following Iraq’s 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the AFC Asian Cup final in July last year, will re-sign the contract on Tuesday.
Iraq Football Association President Hussein Saeed confirmed the deal saying all the financial and technical details of the one-year contract have been approved.
Vieira was succeeded by Norwegian Egil Olsen after the AFC Asian Cup but was sacked after three matches for refusing to coach in the war-torn country.
Former AFC Coach of the Year Adnan Hamad was handed over the reins in February but was fired on June 25 following the team’s 1-0 loss to Qatar which officially ended Iraq’s dream of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Vieira, who did coaching stints in Morocco, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, was sacked by AFC Champions League 2007 runners-up Iran’s Sepahan in June this year following the team’s failure to reach the knock-out stage in the continent’s premier club competition.
