MANAMA: Top international referee Mike Riley, of England, conducted a training course for 25 referees in Bahrain recently – an initiative that has been welcomed by the AFC.
Riley was invited by the Bahrain Football Association to prepare the referees for the forthcoming football season as well as international matches.
George Cumming, Group Manager for Referees Education in the AFC Referees Department, said such programmes can benefit referees in Asia. He also said it would be good for Asian referees to travel to other confederations and widen their horizons
“It is good to expose referees to other cultures to see how people do things in other parts of the world. I look forward to Asian referees having the same experiences with AFC,” said Cumming.
“We think it was an excellent initiative from Bahrain to hold such a training course.”
Riley, who has been a FIFA international referee since 1999, has almost 30 years of experience with the whistle.
He refereed many matches in the English Premier League and was England’s representative at Euro 2004.
He said the highlight of his career was the 2002 FA Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea.
Of his trip to Bahrain, he was quoted in the local media as saying: “One of the really nice things is that I get to go and talk to referees all over the world and I was honoured when the Bahrain Football Federation asked me to come and prepare their referees before the season starts.
“I held a three-day course which covered rules and regulations of proper refereeing, sport psychology and physical endurance.”
