CHONBURI – Reigning champions Chonburi missed the chance to return to the top of the 2008 Thailand Premier League (TPL) standings after being held to a surprise 1-1 home draw by the Royal Thai Army on Saturday.
Cote d’Ivoire striker Kone Mohamed put the Shark one up two minutes before the break only for Geert Pinckaers to earn the second-from-bottom club a share of the spoils with a 58th minute equaliser.
The draw left Chonburi second with 51 points, one behind Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) who failed to extend their lead after being held to a goalless draw by promoted side Chula Sinthana.
Third place BEC Tero Sasana closed the gap on the top two after the inaugural AFC Champions League finalists edged Coke Bangpra 1-0, with Arian Jean Akassou’s 25th minute winner taking the Fire Dragons’ points tally to 48.
Telephone Organisation of Thailand moved to 43 points following their goalless draw with Thailand Tobacco Monopoly while fifth place Osotspa M-150 had to come from two down to defeat bottom-of-the-table Customs Department 3-2.
In the remaining matches Samut Songkhram enjoyed a 2-0 win over Nakhon Pathom while a thrilling ‘battle of the banks’ ended in favour of Krung Thai Bank (KTB), with the two-time TPL champions defeating Bangkok Bank 4-3.
Samuel Ajayi, who was signed from Cambodian side Phnom Penh Empire, gave KTB an 11th minute lead before midfielder Tanut Wongsuparak added to the Nigerian striker’s opener ten minutes.
Peerapong Pichitchotirat made it 3-0 with two minutes of the first-half to go but any thoughts that KTB had the points in the bank were soon dispelled when Anusorn Srichaluang pulled one back in stoppage-time before making it 3-2 two minutes after the interval.
Anusorn’s double inspired Bangkok Bank and in the 58th minute they were level when midfielder Amarit Aekwong netted the equaliser.
However, KTB were not to be denied and sealed the win four minutes from time through Cote d’Ivoire striker Kassim Kone.
