COLOMBO: Police edged past debutants Civil Security Force (CSF) 6-5 on penalties to clinch the Sri Lanka’s Holcim FA Cup after 35 years recently.
After the barren first half, CSF striker Nuwan Perera gave his side the lead but Mohamed Naushad headed home the equaliser in the 66th minute on a captain Sanjaya Pradip Kumar corner for Police who had the services of three national players.
Police reached the final of this prestigious competition on five occasions but managed to lift the title only once in 1973.
CSF’s Krishantha and Anil Shantha missed golden opportunities in the 25th and 40th minutes respectively while their goalkeeper Jeevan Kumara Silva was at his best thwarting attacks from J. Hashimdeen’s charges.
After Chathura Ekanayake missed CSF’s seventh spot kick, D M Sugath netted the winning penalty for Police.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Mahinda Palitha-coached CSF defeated Air-Force while Police overcame fancied Ratnam SC.
