KUALA LUMPUR: DPR Korea turned on the power on Saturday to beat newcomers Australia 4-2 and reach the final of the AFC Under-19 Women's Championship at Kuala Lumpur Cheras Stadium.
Korea DPR led 2-0 after only 15 minutes and although the Aussies fought back bravely, the Koreans always had the upper hand to book their place in Tuesday's final against China PR.
Kim Song-hui and Ra Un-sim scored two each for the Koreans, who had finished second in Group A behind Japan. Korea DPR also qualified for the World Championship in August in Russia along with their final opponents, China PR. Australia, who topped Group B with three victories, still have a chance to play in Russia if they can beat Japan in the third-place play-off on Tuesday.
Korea DPR coach Choe Kwang-sok said his players adapted well to Australian's physical style of play. "Australia play a European style of football and this is the first time we've really come up against that type of play," said Choe. "So I'm pleased that we were able to win and I thank the Australians for giving us experience with that style of football." Australian coach Alistair Edwards was full of praise for the Koreans. "We knew they were a very physical and good team," he said. "North Korea played very well but I'm disappointed with the result. "We started a bit scrappily and fought our way back and had our chances, but so did North Korea." Kim Song-hui gave Korea DPR the lead on six minutes when she pounced on a rebound to beat Australian goalkeeper Lydia Williams. Kim doubled the score seven minutes later when she drilled home a low cross after great work by Ra. Australia pulled one back five minutes before the break through Sasha McDonnell, who took advantage after Korea DPR goalkeeper Wi Un-ok spilled a free-kick.
The Aussies appeared to be on the way back but the Koreans restored their two-goal advantage in the 81st minute through Ra, who scored with a header.
Although skipper Sally Shipard revived Aussies hopes with a goal nine minutes from time, Ra made sure of victory for Korea DPR by scoring deep into injury time.
