One of Asia's newest members of FIFA, Bhutan, sandwiched between China and India, has no great tradition of football. The national team experienced a record 20-0 lost to Kuwait in the Asian Cup qualifiers 2000.
Nevertheless, the team showed two years later that it has progressed when they scored their first victory since joining FIFA in 2000 and they chose the right platform for the victory too!
Relatively unknown, Bhutan burst onto the world scene - relatively speaking - when they faced Montserrat in "The Other Final" for the self-proclaimed "worst team in the world" title. Coming the day before the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan?final, Bhutan proved the far better side running out 4-0 winners.
Lately they have been showing some promise ?even reaching the qualifying stage of the Asian Cup China 2004 by beating Guam 6-0 and holding Mongolia 0-0 in the pre-qualification stage.
Although the team could not hold its own against seasoned teams such as Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, their continuous participation has unearthed some young talents.
