The Philippines has one of the oldest footballing histories in Asia. The Philippine Football Federation (initially the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation) was founded in 1907 and six years after that, Asia witnessed its first ever international when the Philippines defeated China 2-1 in the Far Eastern Games in Manila. Football was reportedly first introduced to the Philippines by invading Spanish conquistadors and the process was accelerated towards the end of the 19th century by a Filipino who had picked up the game while studying in Hong Kong. However, basketball remains Philippines number one sport which pushes the efforts of the PFF to capture the hearts and minds of the people in football. As with their history of poor results, Philippines decided not to take part in the qualifying rounds of the Germany 06 to focus on developing youth football and competing in regional football tournaments such as the 2004 Tiger Cup.
