Syria Football Association (SFA) is considered one of the oldest FA in Asia. Formed in 1936, they joined FIFA in 1937 and later, made AFC membership in 1969.
Currently, there are about 120 clubs registered with the following numbers registered for players (25,000), referees (425) and local coaches (1,500).
Syria’s achievements are mostly achieved at the youth level. Their highlight at the Asian Youth Championship came in 1994 when they were crowned Champions. However, two years before, as the third-placed team in Asia, they had qualified to the FIFA World Youth Championship where they finished fifth.
Although yet to make an impact at the senior level for national team competitions, in 2004, Syrian clubs made history as two of their clubs qualified for the AFC Cup finals. Both Al Jaish and Al Wahda conquered their oppositions before Al Jaish gong the extra step beating Al Wahda to claim the title.
