In the half a century or so since football was introduced to Vietnam by French traders, the 'beautiful game' has emerged as the country's most popular team sport and is now played by more than 300,000 on a regular basis.
Football was played in Vietnam since the early 20th century. However, due to the war, it had not been developed into a movement with a leading body until 1960 when the Vietnam Football Association (VFA) was founded.
In 1961, VFA was recommended by the Bulgarian Football Union to FIFA and in 1964, it was officially admitted to be affiliated member of FIFA and AFC. In August 1989, VFA was renamed to Vietnam Football Federation.
The V-league was started in 2000 with 12 teams in a move for professionalism in Vietnam football. The professional league has been an outstanding success in terms elevating football standards of the clubs and the national team.
