Kuala Lumpur: Korea Republic international and Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min has become the first Asian to win the English Premier League Player of the Month award.
The 24-year-old Son scored four goals last month to help unbeaten Tottenham to their current second position in the table. He recorded a double in Spurs' 4-0 win at Stoke, before repeating that feat in their 2-1 triumph at Middlesbrough.
He also scored a goal in his nation’s 2018 FIFA World Cup third qualifying round match against Qatar early this month.
Son beat Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Adam Lallana of Liverpool and Everton man Romelu Lukaku to the award and was surprised he had also beaten fellow countryman and former Manchester United star Park Ji-sung to the record.
“Many players deserved it,” Son told the English Premier League’s official website.
“Park Ji-sung had great seasons. I can’t believe I’m the first player from Asia [to win it]. I’m very thankful for the support. They support every day, every weekend, every game.”
