AFC President congratulates United on winning 2026 FIFA World Cup hosting rights
Moscow: Shaikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president, has sent his congratulations to the United bid after they won the right to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After the 68th FIFA Congress voted overwhelmingly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States, the AFC President wrote to the Canadian Football Association, the Mexican Football Association and the United States Soccer Federation to offer his congratulations.
Shaikh Salman wrote: “On behalf of the Asian Football Confederation and the entire Asian football family, please accept my heartfelt congratulations and compliments after winning the rights to host the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the 68th FIFA Congress earlier today in Moscow.
“I am confident that your joint efforts will deliver an excellent and memorable World Cup. I wish you all the best in your preparations and we look forward to witnessing an historic tournament in your country.”
The United bid gained 134 votes or 67 per cent of the votes cast while their rival Morocco picked up 65 votes at the Congress held in Moscow on the eve of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.
