AFC President extends condolences on the passing of former Chinese PR international Zhang Ouying
Kuala Lumpur: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has sent his condolences to Chinese Football Association Acting President Du Zhaocai, on the demise of Chinese and Asian women’s football icon – Zhang Ouying.
The AFC President extended his deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the former Chinese international who passed away on Sunday following her brave battle with cancer.
“On behalf of the whole Asian football family, please accept my heartfelt sympathies and condolences on her loss. Ms. Zhang will always be remembered for her contributions to women’s football in China PR,” said Shaikh Salman.
Zhang was an integral part of the Steel Roses’ golden era which saw them come agonisingly close to lifting the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup when China PR lost to hosts USA in the final on penalties.
The China PR skipper went on to help the Steel Roses clinch the gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games and the Women’s AFC Asian Cup title a year later and featured prominently in two more FIFA Women’s World Cups in 2003 and 2007 as well as two Summer Olympic Games.
The former midfielder then turned youth coach upon retirement, and enjoyed numerous successful stints in San Diego, California, including her most recent spell with the San Diego Soccer Club.
