Jordan come from behind to book Finals ticket
Zarqa City: Jordan overcame the setback of going behind as they advanced to the AFC U-19 Championship 2018 by winning Group E of the Qualifiers at the Prince Mohammad International Stadium on Wednesday.
Jordan and Syria went into the tie in the knowledge that whoever won the match would seal the automatic ticket to the Finals.
Given what was at stake, both teams opted for a cautious approach and the first half ended scoreless.
That changed nine minutes into the second half as Mohamad Al Hallak gave Syria the lead.
Undeterred by the setback, Jordan increased their tempo and the equaliser came just four minutes later as Mohammad Wa'el Alzu'bi hit their equaliser.
The home team kept pressing and Oomar Hani Alzebdieh scored the winner in the 73rd minute to seal Jordan a 2-1 win and a place in the Finals.
Islamic Republic of Iran scored their first win of the qualifiers, beating Palestine 4-0 but it was not enough for them to qualify for the Finals.
Iran drew against Syria (1-1) and Jordan (0-0) and the results were not enough to take them through despite finishing second in the group.
Iran went in for maximum points against already-eliminated Palestine and took the lead in the 10th minute through striker Hossein Nokhodkar.
The second goal followed just four minutes later with Alireza Ghaderi Zefreh (pictured above, No 21) the goalscorer.
Mohammad Khodabandehlo added a third just before half-time and Iran were cruising.
They somewhat took their foot off the pedal in the second half but there was to be a fourth goal, with Mohammad Bagheri finding the back of the net in the 75th minute.
