Chiba: Shin Tae-yong credited Korea Republic’s agonising loss in the final of the 2016 AFC U23 Championship as the motivation behind his side’s ability to overturn an early deficit to defeat Japan on Saturday to claim the EAFF E-1 Championship title.
Yu Kobayashi put Japan in front after just three minutes from the penalty spot but a brace from Kim Shin-wook as well as free kicks from Jung Woo-young and Yeom Ki-hun secured Korea Republic a 4-1 win that saw them successfully defend the regional title.
The win came almost two years after the Shin-coached Korea Republic U23 team threw away a two-goal lead to lose in the final of the AFC U23 Championship in Qatar, and the former Ilhwa Chunma midfielder used the lessons learned from that reversal to turn the tables on Japan counterpart Vahid Halilhodzic.
