Manama: The United Arab Emirates came back from a goal down to pick up their first win of the AFC U-19 Championship Bahrain 2016 on Thursday evening with a 3-1 victory over DPR Korea, although it was not enough to stop Jakub Dovalil’s side from exiting the competition.
Ahmed Rashid, Faisal Al Matroushi and Jassim Yaqoob scored for the UAE after Han Kwang-song had given DPR Korea an early lead, but the three points secured left Dovalil and his players in third place behind Group C winners Iraq and runners-up Vietnam. DPR Korea, meanwhile, leave the championship with no points from their three group games.
Despite the disappointment of suffering two defeats at the start of the tournament, DPR Korea took the lead in just the eighth minute with a slick passing move that capitalised on the UAE’s ponderous start to the game.
Beginning from goalkeeper Ri Chol-song, the Koreans passed the ball neatly and quickly down the left before Han took possession 40 yards from goal. After a surge towards goal, the DPR Korea captain unleashed an unstoppable left foot shot that gave Mohamed Hasan little chance in the UAE goal.
As the half wore on, the UAE were slowly roused, and Husain Abdulla should have done better when he glanced his 14th minute header wide of the target.
