The AFC Legal Department – led by the guidance the AFC Legal Committee, AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee along with the Governance Task Force - has been central to ensuring the AFC, its Member Associations and key stakeholders conform to the laws of the game and highest standards of integrity and good governance.
In October 2015, the AFC Legal department held a workshop for newly appointed members on judicial bodies and the Legal Committee to ensure the utmost ethical standards for the AFC, and which also introduced a new Disciplinary and Ethics Code.
As a result of working closely, there has been significant progress made in the area of match manipulation with the implementation of awareness – raising measures at every AFC competition. This has been supported by decisive and important decisions made by the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee.
The Legal department has also worked with the Electoral Committee on the Electoral Code for the AFC Extraordinary Congress in Goa in September 2016 and for the AFC Congress in Bahrain in May 2017.
At the same time, there has been much legal work around the preparation for the AFC Asian Cup 2019 UAE and the bidding process to establish the host for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup as well as the disciplinary matters around the AFC’s club competitions.
The Legal Department has also been central to the review and revision of the Commercial contracts involving sponsorship and media/broadcast as well as those contracts affecting both the AFC Competitions and Events, particularly as the AFC prepares one of the largest sales of football rights in Confederation history.
The Legal advice extends beyond the band of commercial, competitions and events through to all the departments and divisions of the AFC.
