Ulsan: Reigning K1 League champions Ulsan HD clinched a thrilling double over last season’s runners-up, Pohang Steelers, in a nine-goal East Coast derby to reach the summit.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima, meanwhile, snatched the lead from Machida Zelvia in the J1 League.

Thimphu: Bam Khatoon FC head coach Marziyeh Jafari credited her team’s attacking strategy for their success in topping Group D of the AFC Women’s Champions League™ 2024/25 Preliminary Stage on Saturday.

Fatemeh Amineh gave the Islamic Republic of Iran side the lead going into the break against Kitchee SC of Hong Kong, China with Mona Hamoudi then striking in the 64th minute to secure Bam Khatoon the three points and ticket into the group stage.

Group D: Bam Khatoon advance in style

Thimphu: Islamic Republic of Iran’s Bam Khatoon FC booked their place in the group stage of the AFC Women’s Champions League™ 2024/25 after defeating Kitchee SC of Hong Kong, China 2-0 in their Preliminary Stage Group D tie at the Changlimithang National Stadium on Saturday.

Bam Khatoon finished with a perfect record, having beaten Bhutan’s Royal Thimphu College FC 2-1 on Matchday One and will join Australia’s Melbourne City, Kaya–Iloilo of the Philippines and Thailand’s College of Asian Scholars in Group B of the inaugural edition of the tournament.

Group D: Kitchee SC (HKG) 1-0 Royal Thimphu College FC (BHU)

Thimphu: Fu Chui Man’s first half goal steered Hong Kong’s Kitchee SC to a 1-0 win over Royal Thimphu College FC of Bhutan in their AFC Women’s Champions League™ 2024/25 Preliminary Stage Group D tie at the Changlimithang Stadium on Wednesday.

The victory means Kitchee will face Bam Khatoon of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Saturday to decide the group winners, while Royal Thimphu College’s campaign comes to an end after two consecutive defeats.

Westwood takes charge of Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong: Hong Kong, China have appointed former Afghanistan coach Ashley Westwood to replace Jorn Andersen as the representative team’s new head coach.

Westwood takes over after Andersen left in June to coach China League One side Yunan Yukun having qualified Hong Kong, China for the finals of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, the first time the association had qualified for the championship since 1968.

The 47-year-old former defender previously worked in club football in India and Malaysia before taking over as Afghanistan coach in November 2023 and has signed a two-year contract.

Hong Kong: Hong Kong, China triumphed 3-2 in their international friendly match against Indonesia on Thursday.

The match, played at the Hong Kong Football Club Ground, was the first of two games, with the second tie to be played on Sunday.

#AFCU17 Qualifying groups decided

Kuala Lumpur: The draw for the AFC U17 Asian Cup™ 2025 Qualifiers was finalised at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The 43 teams were divided into 10 groups - seven of four each and three of five - with the Qualifiers to be played between October 19 and 27, 2024.

The 10 group winners and five best second-placed teams will advance to the Finals, with Saudi Arabia scheduled to host the tournament.

Group E: Turkmenistan, Hong Kong, China bid farewell with stalemate

Ashgabat: Turkmenistan finished in third place in Group E after holding Hong Kong, China to a goalless draw at the Ashgabat Stadium to bring their Preliminary Joint Qualification – Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ campaign to a conclusion on Tuesday.

The Central Asians, who finished above their visitors by virtue of a superior goal difference, will now move into the third round of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers alongside Hong Kong, China, where 24 teams will battle for the six spots left in the continental competition to be hosted by Saudi Arabia in 2027.

The two sides went into their final Group E outing having collected only a single point in five matches – which came in a 2-2 draw when they met on Matchday Two.
