Pohang: Park Tae-ha and Jens Wissing expressed their satisfaction despite FC Pohang Steelers and Gamba Osaka sharing a 1-1 draw in their AFC Champions League Two 2025/26™ Round of 16 first leg tie on Thursday.

New season jitters played a part in the result with the match being Pohang’s first of the year and Gamba’s second.

Pohang: FC Pohang Steelers and Gamba Osaka have it all to play for in their AFC Champions League Two 2025/26™ Round of 16 tie after sharing a 1-1 stalemate in the first leg on Thursday.

Ryoya Yamashita gave the visitors the lead early in the second half but the Japanese side were pegged back by a spectacular Jorge Luiz strike for the Korea Republic outfit to set up an enticing return fixture at Suita City Football Stadium next week.

Kuala Lumpur: The teams vying for the title learnt their Group Stage challengers following the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ Official Draw at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The 16 teams were divided into four groups with the tournament to be contested between between May 5 and 22, 2026.

Kuala Lumpur: The 12 hopefuls for the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2026™ discovered their road to continental glory following the Official Draw at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The 12 teams - expanded from eight - were divided into three groups with the tournament to be contested between May 1 and 17, 2026.

Shanghai: FC Machida Zelvia’s fairy-tale debut in the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26™ continues as the Japanese side secured qualification to the Round of 16 with head coach Go Kuroda expressing his delight at the achievement.

Machida capped an impressive continental debut with a 2-0 against China PR’s Shanghai Shenhua FC on Tuesday to take them up 14 points, with Kuroda pinpointing Yuki Soma’s third minute opener from the penalty spot as being crucial to the win.

Kuala Lumpur: By their high standards, Japan have not enjoyed much success in recent years.

Quarter-final exits at both the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 and 2024 Paris Olympic Games, as well as elimination in the semi-finals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™, saw the Japan Football Association decline to renew the contract of Futoshi Ikeda in August 2024 after almost three years at the helm.

In stepped Nils Nielsen, who became the first foreign manager in Nadeshiko history with his appointment in December 2024 – and the person charged with bringing glory to Japan again.

Shanghai: Japan’s FC Machida Zelvia confirmed their progress to the last 16 of the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26™ on Tuesday as Yuki Soma struck twice to secure a 2-0 win over hosts Shanghai Shenhua FC for Go Kuruda’s side.

The win at Shanghai Stadium moves the J1 League side onto 14 points from their seven games to date and that total is enough to confirm the Emperor’s Cup holders will progress to the next phase of the competition, which will be played in March.
 
Shanghai Shenhua, by contrast, have been eliminated with Leonid Slutsky’s side remaining on four points and adrift of the qualification slots with only their clash with Buriram United from Thailand next Tuesday left to play.

Kobe: Vissel Kobe booked their ticket to the Round of 16 of the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26™ knockout stage with a late 2-0 win over FC Seoul on Tuesday.

Second-half goals by Yoshinori Muto and Gotoku Sakai at the Kobe City Misaki Park Stadium cemented Michael Skibbe side’s place at the top of the table with 16 points. 

Korea Republic’s FC Seoul, seven points adrift, will need a win in their last match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima to stay in the running.

Hiroshima: Akito Suzuki scored twice as Sanfrecce Hiroshima came back from going behind to an early Marcos Guilherme strike to hand 10-man Johor Darul Ta’zim a 2-1 defeat on Tuesday and advance to the last 16 of the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26™.

Guilherme gave the visitors a third minute lead when he pounced on a defensive error but Jonathan Silva’s sending off swung proceedings in Sanfrecce’s favour and Suzuki’s double in the 18th and 47th minutes confirmed his side’s progress to the next round.

 

Hiroshima move onto 14 points from seven matches and cannot finish outside the top eight of the eastern league phase standings with one round remaining. JDT, meanwhile, stay on eight points ahead of next week’s meeting with Vissel Kobe.
