East Asia Wrap: Chengdu extend lead; Kashima, Vissel stay top; Seoul edge Jeonbuk

Tokyo: Chengdu Rongcheng FC strengthened their position at the top of the Chinese Super League, while defending champions Shanghai Port FC continued to struggle.

In Japan, Kashima Antlers and Vissel Kobe maintained their leads in Group A and B respectively, while FC Seoul moved clear at the top in Korea Republic after edging Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

Pathim Thani: Korea Republic squeezed into the last four of the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup Thailand 2026™ with a 2-1 win against a spirited Thailand in extra-time in their quarter-final match at the Thammasat Stadium on Sunday.

Park Ju-ha’s 106th minute winner earned Park Youn-jeoun’s side a semi-final meeting with DPR Korea on Wednesday and also booked them a spot at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026.

Nairobi: Sam Kerr netted her 74th international goal to help Australia begin their FIFA Series 2026 campaign with a 5-0 win over Malawi at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.

India suffered a 2-0 defeat to Kenya while Korea Republic lost 5-1 Brazil in their respective FIFA Series ties.

Japan, meanwhile, were edged 2-1 by the United States in an international friendly.

Pathum Thani: Thailand will aim to pull off a major upset when they face Korea Republic in the quarter-finals of the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup Thailand 2026 on Sunday.

The Southeast Asian side, in qualifying for their only AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup semi-finals at the 2004 edition in China, lost 3-0 to Korea Republic, who went on to claim the first of two continental trophies. 

Their next meeting was at the 2015 edition, also in China, where Thailand again fell 3-0, with the defeat resulting in group stage elimination.

Pathum Thani: Head coach Han Chol Hak was not overly exuberant despite DPR Korea’s dominant win over Korea Republic in their concluding AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup Thailand 2026™ Group B encounter on Wednesday.

The defending champions overpowered their opponents 5-0 and could have increased the scoreline if not for a gutsy performance from Korea Republic keeper Kim Chae-been but Han said he expected more from his players.

Nonthaburi: Head coach Park Youn-jeong was dissatisfied with Korea Republic’s lapses of concentration in their 2-1 win over Jordan in their AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup Thailand 2026™ Group B match on Sunday.

Champions in 2004 and 2013, Korea Republic scored late in the first half through Jin Hye-rin and Lee Hae-un but allowed Jordan back in the game with a goal in the 51st minute.
