East Asia Wrap: Ulsan in driver’s seat; Sanfrecce notch win

Seoul: Defending champions Ulsan HD FC extended their lead at the top of the table with a come-from-behind win over second-place Gimcheon Sangmu FC as the regular K League 1 season came to an end.

In Japan, Sanfrecce Hiroshima stayed in front of the chasing pack with a 2-1 defeat of Jubilo Iwata.

Relieved Skibbe hails Sanfrecce's resilience

Hong Kong: Sanfrecce Hiroshima head coach Michael Skibbe praised his team’s resilience after Hayato Araki’s stoppage-time header secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Eastern SC in Group E of the AFC Champions League™ 2024-25 at Mong Kok Stadium on Thursday.

Eastern took the early lead before Sanfrecce replied with two quick strikes, only for the Hong Kong side to level the tie before Araki in stoppage time to snatch the win for the Japanese outfit.

Group E: Eastern (HKG) 2-3 Sanfrecce Hiroshima (JPN)

Hong Kong: Hayato Araki broke Eastern SC hearts with a header deep into stoppage time that give Sanfrecce Hiroshima a 3-2 win over the Hong Kong Premier League side in Group E of the AFC Champions League Two™ 2024-25 at Mong Kok Stadium on Thursday.

Araki pounced in the sixth minute of added time to seal victory for the Japanese side after Noah Baffoe’s goal early in the second half had looked set to earn Roberto Losada’s team a share of the points.

Daniel Almazan’s seventh minute header gave Eastern the lead until quick-fire goals in the 40th and 41st minutes by Hiroya Matsumoto and Yotaro Nakajima put Hiroshima in front only for Baffoe to equalise inside the opening 30 seconds of the second half.

The result means Hiroshima and Sydney FC share top spot in the group while both Eastern and Kaya-FC Iloilo have yet to pick up a point.

Group G: Tampines Rovers (SGP) 3-1 Lee Man (HKG)

Singapore: Tampines Rovers fought back from going behind in the fourth minute to hand Hong Kong Premier League champions Lee Man a 3-1 defeat on Wednesday to pick up their first win in Group G of the AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Li Ngai Hoi scored early for the visitors but Boris Koptovic’s injury time penalty set up Gavin Lee’s side to take control of the second half, where Faris Ramli put Tampines in front before Seia Kunori sealed the win with 15 minutes remaining.

The win is Tampines’ first in the group phase of the AFC Champions League Two while Lee Man are still looking for their first point of the campaign.

Hiroshima: Sanfrecce Hiroshima boosted their J1 League title hopes after seeing off Machida Zelvia 2-0.

In Korea Republic, Ulsan recovered to overcome Daejeon Hana Citizen to maintain their grip on the summit.

Doha: Qatar emerged the Group J winners of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 Qualifiers after a thrilling 3-2 win over Jordan on Sunday. 

The result meant Qatar finished with a perfect nine points while Jordan, despite the defeat, also advanced to the Finals as one of the best five second-placed teams.

Hong Kong, China finished third after a 2-0 win over Singapore.

Doha: Jordan and Qatar are set for a top-of-the-table clash after both registered their second wins in Group J of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 Qualifiers on Friday.

Jordan will head into Sunday's showdown only needing a draw after defeating Singapore 2-0 while Qatar, who have an inferior goal difference, also beat Hong Kong, China by the same score.

Qatar defeated Singapore 3-0 while Jordan were even more prolific, beating Hong Kong, China 7-0.

Sydney: Debutant Anas Ouahim scored twice as Sydney FC eased to an opening 5-0 win over Eastern FC from Hong Kong, China in Group E of the AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 at Jubilee Stadium in Sydney on Thursday.

The Moroccan put his new club in front in the 32nd minute before hitting the third 10 minutes after the restart with captain Rhyan Grant having doubled the lead a minute before the end of the first half.

While a missed penalty in the 62nd minute took some of the shine off the performance of Patryk Klimala, another recent arrival, a pair of own goals from Daniel Almazan and Leung Chun Pong confirmed a comfortable victory for Sydney.

Hong Kong: Vietnam’s Nam Dinh Lee Man kicked off their AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 campaign on a winning note after easing 2-0 past Lee Man of Hong Kong at the Mong Kok Stadium on Wednesday.

The win sets Nam Dinh up nicely for their home tie against Bangkok United of Thailand in two weeks, while Lee Man face Singapore’s Tampines Rovers.
