Asian Qualifiers: A look back at Group H


Kuala Lumpur: With the draw for the final round of the AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road to Qatar set to be held on July 1, excitement is building as the 12 teams get set to learn their opponents.

The 12 sides went through extremely challenging times to advance to the final round, where the two group winners and runners-up will join hosts Qatar in the FIFA World Cup 2022 Finals while the third-placed teams from the two groups will advance to the Confederation Playoff, with the winners moving into the Inter-Confederation Playoff.

Ahead of the draw, the-AFC.com retraces how the 12 teams booked their places from the second round of qualifying with the focus on Group H.

The withdrawal saw Korea Republic in top spot when Group H resumed in June, 2021 and Paulo Bento's side were in sparkling form, opening with a 5-0 defeat of Turkmenistan on June 7.

Asian Qualifiers - Review: Group H

That was followed by a 5-0 victory over Sri Lanka, a result which all but assured Korea Republic top spot in Group H.

Seeking a tenth consecutive appearance at the FIFA World Cup Finals, Korea Republic showed grit as they came from behind to defeat Lebanon in their final match, with talismanic skipper Son Heung-min scoring the winner from the penalty spot.

Lebanon also advanced to the final round of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as one of the best five runners-up with both teams also confirming their places in the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Finals.

Turkmenistan and Sri Lanka, meanwhile, advanced to the final round of the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Qualifiers.
