Bangladesh lifted by win over Bhutan

Dhaka: Bangladesh warmed up for the next round of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 with a 4-1 win over Bhutan in the first of two international friendlies at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.

A first half brace from Abahani Limited Dhaka stiker Nabib Newaj Jibon gave Bangladesh a two-goal cushion before goals from Biplo Ahmed and substitute Rabiul Hasan in the second half put the game beyond Bhutan's reach.

The result is a massive boost for head coach Jamie Day, whose side lost 1-0 to Afghanistan in Group E of the Asian Qualifiers on Matchday One.

Day's team will face Bhutan again on Thursday before stepping up preparations for their clash against Asian champions Qatar in the Asian Qualifiers on October 10 in Dhaka.

Qatar sailed to a 6-0 win over Afghanistan in their Group opener before being held to a goalless draw against India and Day is looking forward to his team taking on the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Champions.

“We scored goals, something we failed to do before. We have got good areas on the pitch. We may get good areas against Qatar one or two times. They got chances today but when we face Qatar we may get fewer chances. We need to take them,” said the 39-year-old Englishman.

“We are pleased with the game despite the condition (of the pitch). The field was muddy but the boys played well and scored four goals.

“The disappointing thing is that we could not keep a clean sheet. We are looking forward to the next game against Bhutan. Hopefully we can win and keep a clean sheet and gain confidence.”

Striker Jibon said Bangladesh took to the field with victory in mind.

“Although we expected such big win, we did not perform well. We are hoping to perform better in the next match and to leave the field with another victory,” said Jibon.
