Confident Saudi Arabia ready for Palestine test in Asian Qualifiers

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia are confident of securing three points against Palestine in Group D of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 on Tuesday.

The two sides shared the spoils in a goalless draw at Faisal Al Husseini Stadium in Al Ram in October 2019 and victory for Saudi Arabia on Tuesday at the King Saud University Stadium will put them top of the group ahead of Uzbekistan, who lead with a point.

“We have great players, whether the experienced ones or those who joined the team from the U23 side. We are ready for the match against Palestine and will perform well," said Saudi Arabia captain Abdullah Otayf.

“We have prepared very well and got a good victory in the friendly against Kuwait. We promise our fans that we will play even better in the next match.”

Midfielder Abdulrahman Ghareeb said the 1-0 win against Kuwait gave his team a confidence boost ahead the match against Palestine.

“The victory against Kuwait was important as it gave us a good push for the match against Palestine,” said Ghareeb. “It was a good test for us and we played as if it was an official match and not a friendly.”

Along with the experienced players, Saudi Arabia head coach Hervé Renard included several new faces in the squad, including Abdulelah Al Amri who marked his international debut by scoring the winner against Kuwait.

“The match against Palestine is very important for us,” said 24-year-old midfielder Sami Al Najei. “We will go into the match fully focused on getting the three important points.

“I want to thank the officials of the national team for their trust and I will not disappoint them,” said Al Najei, whose only previous international appearance for Saudi Arabia was when he came on as a substitute against Cambodia in a friendly back in 2017.
