Jahanbakhsh to miss IR Iran ties


Tehran: Alireza Jahanbakhsh will miss Islamic Republic of Iran's next two Asian Qualifiers' matches after the attacker was left out of the squad by head coach Marc Wilmots.

The Brighton & Hove Albion FC attacker was the conspicuous name absent from the squad announced by Wilmots to face Cambodia and Bahrain in Group C of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 qualifying.

Iran, who opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Hong Kong on September 10, won't be lacking firepower though as Sardar Azmoun and Mehdi Taremi were both included in the squad.

Iran will host Cambodia at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran on Thursday before travelling to play Bahrain in Riffa five days later.

Seeking a third consecutive appearance at the FIFA World Cup, Iran will be targeting maximum points from both matches.

Cambodia will be aiming for the three points as well, having only collected one after the opening two matchdays following a 1-1 draw with Hong Kong and 1-0 defeat to Bahrain.

Bahrain opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw with Iraq.
