Lebanon’s Ciobotariu disappointed with DPR Korea draw

Beirut: Lebanon head coach Liviu Ciobotariu was left disappointed following his side’s goalless home draw with DPR Korea in Group H of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 on Tuesday.

Lebanon failed to break the deadlock against DPR Korea at Beirut Sports City to squander a chance to go top of the group.

The West Asians, together with DPR Korea and Korea Republic, are on eight points with Turkmenistan leading the group after defeating Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

MD6 - Group H: Lebanon 0-0 DPR Korea

Beirut: Lebanon and DPR Korea could not be separated as they shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw at the Sports City Stadium in Beirut to stay equal at eight points each in Group H of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers.

The result meant both teams failed to capitalise on a chance to end 2019 as the group leaders, with Turkmenistan to head into 2020 top of the standings with nine points.

Korea Republic, who were not in Asian Qualifiers action on Tuesday, are second on eight points, ahead of Lebanon and DPR Korea on goal difference.

Ashgabat: Turkmenistan completed a dream week on home soil to take top spot, at least temporarily, in Group H of the Asian Qualifiers after a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka at Kopetdag Stadium on Tuesday.

Abdy Bashimov and Altymyrat Annadurdyyev found the back of the net as Turkmenistan backed up Thursday’s 3-1 success against DPR Korea to move to nine points from five matches.

Ante Miše’s side are now a single point ahead of Korea Republic, who hold a game in hand, while Sri Lanka remain at the bottom of the group without a goal or a point after five matches.

Thimphu: Captain Bader Al Motawaa admitted Kuwait had to work hard for their 1-0 win over Nepal in Group B of the Asian Qualifiers on Tuesday.

Kuwait went into the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 qualification tie on the back of a 9-0 win over Chinese Taipei on Thursday.

The West Asians had also defeated Nepal 7-0 when the two teams met in September and were overwhelming favourites to score another emphatic win.

Muharraq: Singapore are back on track in their Asian Qualifiers Group D campaign after beating Yemen 2-1 on Tuesday, a result which did not came as a surprise for head coach Tatsuma Yoshida. 

In Singapore’s fifth FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 qualifying match, the Southeast Asians took a 19th minute lead, before doubling their advantage in the 52nd minute and then seeing off a late Yemen revival to secure the three points.

Hey delighted as Myanmar get back on track

Mandalay: Myanmar enjoyed a fantastic week, as the Southeast Asians recorded back-to-back wins in Group F of the Asian Qualifiers to place themselves back in contention for a top two finish.

Myanmar followed up Thursday's 4-3 win over Tajikistan with a 1-0 defeat of Mongolia on Tuesday to revive their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 qualifying campaign.

The wins, which followed three consecutive defeats, have to be credited to head coach Antoine Hey, who has steadied the ship after replacing Miodrag Radulovic at the helm last month.
