Dubai: Syria made it five wins from five as they recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Philippines on Tuesday to reinforce their position at the top of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers Group A standings.
Ward Al Salama’s first-half goal proved the difference at Dubai’s Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium as Syria, despite not always having things their own way against a spirited Philippines outfit, went on to ensure another three-point haul and to add yet more momentum to an already impressive campaign.
The result leaves Syria eight points clear of China PR in second and well on track to guarantee their progress, while their opponents remain third in the table with seven points from their five matches.

Guangzhou Evergrande defender Zhang put the ball in his own net after Wu Lei had earlier cancelled out Osama Omari’s header to leave Marcello Lippi’s side in second place in the group, level on seven points with the Philippines after four matches.
It was a result which led to Lippi announcing his resignation, which was subsequently accepted by the Chinese Football Association.

Bacolod City: Syria turned on the power as they saw off the Philippines 5-2 to open their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers campaign emphatically on Thursday.
Syria had come into the Group A tie after a difficult 2019 WAFF Championship and the Philippines had been confident of taking the three points in a meeting between two teams who had been part of the cast at the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 earlier this year.
Instead, it was the West Asians who took full points as they recovered from going behind in the sixth minute to power past the Philippines.
