MD4 - Group A: Syria 4-0 Guam

Dubai: Omar Al Soma was the star of the night with a hat-trick as Syria defeated Guam 4-0 on Matchday Four of the Asian Qualifiers on Tuesday.

The result, coupled with China PR's goalless draw with the Philippines in the day's earlier tie, meant that Fajer Ebrahim's Syria now top Group A with nine points, while Guam suffered a fourth successive defeat in their qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

Syria were on a high after scoring wins over the Philippines and Maldives, and that saw the West Asians enjoying the best of starts against Guam at the neutral venue of Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai.

Less than three minutes into the tie, Hussein Al Jawayed supplied a curling cross into the box which Al Soma's headed home to open the scoring.

Guam maintained their composure and were successful in pushing the Syrians back into their own half, but were unable to get into the final third to test goalkeeper Ibrahim Alma.

Syria had found it difficult to breach the Guam defensive shield after taking the lead but Al Soma's brilliance in the 44th minute saw him outplaying Shawn Nicklaw and Mark Chargualaf, before striking from almost 20 yards to double their advantage heading into the break.

Al Soma was inches from clinching his hat-trick in the 65th minute when Mahmoud Al Mawas supplied a brilliant cross in front of the goalmouth but the Syrian captain couldn't get his header on target but he was not to be denied in the 83rd minute when Guam failed to properly clear the ball, which allowed him to complete his treble with a left-footed strike.

Syria, however, were not finished as Mahmoud Al Mawas etched his name on the scoresheet five minutes into stoppage time, courtesy of substitute Mohammad Al Marmour's cross to the left to seal an emphatic win.

Syria play China on November 14, in what will be their most important match to date, while Guam will only resume their campaign on November 19 when they face Maldives.
