MD4 - Group C: Cambodia 0-4 Iraq

Phnom Penh: Iraq secured their second consecutive Asian Qualifiers victory after seeing off Cambodia 4-0 in Group C at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on Tuesday.

Iraq, who defeated Hong Kong 2-0 last Thursday, flexed their muscles against Cambodia as they took a 2-0 lead at half-time before finishing the job in the second half.

Cambodia only have a point to show after four matches with the defeat against Iraq their third consecutive loss, having fallen to Bahrain (1-0) and Islamic Republic of Iran (14-0). They drew 1-1 with Hong Kong on Matchday One.

Iraq seized possession from the start and came close to finding the net in the sixth minute but Humam Tariq fired his overhead kick wide off the mark.

The West Asians should have scored 10 minutes later as Tariq once again came close but he failed to connect to a follow-up following Cambodia goalkeeper Keo Soksela’s clearance.

Tariq was a thorn in Cambodia’s side and the winger orchestrated the opening goal for Iraq in the 22nd minute when his cross took a deflection before falling into the path of Ibrahim Bayesh, who headed into the back of the net.

Spurred on by their fans, Cambodia almost scored the equaliser in the 26th minute when Keo Sokpheng forced Iraq custodian Mohammed Hameed Farhan into making a save while Kouch Sokumpheak’s attempt to score from the rebound was foiled.

The visitors, however, doubled their advantage in the 41st minute through Mohanad Ali Kadhim’s header following Ali Adnan’s cross from the left.

Despite a two-goal deficit, Cambodia came back fighting in the second half and almost found the net in the 48th minute when Sokpheng’s shot from inside the box took a deflection but Farhan scrambled the ball to safety.

Any hope of a Cambodian fightback was quickly diminished as Iraq added their third in the 57th minute through Amjad Attwan’s long-range effort.

Captain Ahmad Ibrahim Khalaf then scored the fourth in the 62nd minute off Bashar Rasan’s corner.
