Turkmenistan v DPR Korea-Asian Qualifiers

Ashgabat: Turkmenistan ended DPR Korea's unbeaten Asian Qualifiers record with a 3-1 win in their Group H tie at the Kopetdag Stadium in Ashgabat on Thursday.

It was Turkmenistan's second win of their qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023, reviving their hopes after having suffered two consecutive defeats.

For DPR Korea, the defeat is a blow to their hopes as they had gone into the tie level on top of the standings with Korea Republic on seven points.

DPR Korea started very much the favourites, having defeated Lebanon and Sri Lanka before playing to a scoreless draw with Korea Republic in Pyongyang the last time out.

Turkmenistan, on the other hand, were in danger of seeing their hopes ended prematurely after defeats to Korea Republic and Lebanon following their opening day win over Sri Lanka.

Backed by their fans, Turkmenistan started the brighter of the two as they pressed DPR Korea.

Their early initiative paid off as Mihail Titov put the home side ahead in the 23rd minute.

Turkmenistan were good value for the lead and they continued to dictate terms with DPR Korea struggling to make inroads.

Turkmenistan's positive approach bore result again with captain Arslanmyrat Amanow doubling their lead in the 73rd minute. A third was to follow just before the final whistle, with Wahit Orazsähedow finding the back of the net.

There was a further blow for DPR Korea as Pak Kwang-ryong missed from the penalty spot in the first minute of added time before Han Kwang-song pulled one back for the East Asians two minutes later.

Next up for Turkmenistan are Sri Lanka at home on Tuesday while DPR Korea face another tough away day at Lebanon in Beirut.
