MD6 - Group A: Maldives 3-1 Guam

Male: Maldives beat Guam 3-1 to record their second win in Group A of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 at the National Stadium on Tuesday. 

The win takes Maldives to six points but they remain fourth in the standings while Guam suffered their fifth consecutive defeat.

The match between the two bottom placed teams in Group A kicked off with both sides showing intensity, with Guam hoping to earn their first points.

Guam’s aggressiveness saw captain Jason Cunliffe and Marcus Lopez being shown the yellow card in the second and 15th minutes respectively.

Despite Guam’s early pressure, Maldives took the lead through Ali Samooh's crackling effort in the 25th minute.

The celebrations were slightly dampened four minutes later when Samooh had to be replaced by Haisham Hassan.

Having beaten Guam in September, Maldives pressed on and got their second goal when Travis Nicklaw booted the ball into his own net, giving the South Asians a two-goal lead heading into the break.

Karl Dodd’s Guam returned in the second half revitalised and within four minutes, John Matkin reduced their deficit.

Guam came close several times to equalising but Maldives goalkeeper Mohamed Faisal’s superb saves in the last 15 minutes kept them ahead.

Petar Sergt’s side confirmed victory a minute into added time when Ali Ashfaq beat the offside trap and lobbed the ball over Guam custodian Dallas Jeffery Jaye to end the game in style.
