MD6 - Group C: Hong Kong 2-0 Cambodia
Hong Kong: Hong Kong sealed their first win in Group H of the Asian Qualifiers on Tuesday as goals from James Ha and Roberto earned Mixu Paatelainen’s side a 2-0 win over 10-man Cambodia.
Ha gave Hong Kong the lead in the 21st minute before Roberto added the second 12 minutes from time after the Cambodians had seen Soeuy Visal sent off for a second bookable offence.
The win moves Hong Kong on to five points, while Cambodia remain rooted to the bottom of the standings with the solitary point they picked up when they drew with Hong Kong the last time the teams met in FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 qualifying.

Goal scoring opportunities were at a premium in the opening 20 minutes, with Sath Rosib’s wayward attempt in the seventh minute a reflection on the lack of quality on show from both sides in the final third of the field.
Hong Kong were labouring, too, with only a weak header from Leung Nok-hang to show for their early efforts after Dani Cancela’s long throw had caused concern in the Cambodian defence.
That was to change, though, when Ha gave Hong Kong the lead in the 21st minute as the Southern striker finished off a fine attacking move by the home side.
Alex Akande surged deep into the Cambodian half before releasing Chun Kok-tan down the right and his low cross was swept home by Ha with his right instep from close range, the ball bulging the roof of the net.
Hong Kong’s lead was rarely threatened, with only Orn Chanpolin’s long range attempt going close to causing goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai any concern, and the visitors’ hopes suffered a severe blow 12 minutes from time.
Visal received his second booking of the game when he attempted to kick the ball out of the hands of Yapp as he tried to clear the ball and, a man down, Cambodia’s chances were effectively finished.
Roberto scored Hong Kong’s second of the night five minutes later to put a gloss on the result the hosts just about deserved as coach Paatelainen claimed his first win in the Asian Qualifiers since taking the helm.
