MD6 - Group F: Myanmar 1-0 Mongolia

Mandalay: Myanmar defeated Mongolia 1-0 at the Mandalar Thiri Stadium on Tuesday to pull themselves back into reckoning in Group F of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

It was the Southeast Asian side's second consecutive victory, having stunned Tajikistan 4-3 on Thursday and gives them hope of, at least, advancing into the third round of the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Qualifiers.

A poor start had seen Myanmar suffer three consecutive defeats, leading to Antoine Hey replacing Miodrag Radulovic as head coach.

It has proven to be a masterstroke as Hey, whose previous stint as Myanmar head coach ended after a poor showing in the 2018 AFF Cup, has stabilised a promising yet erratic Myanmar side.

Boosted by their win over Tajikistan, Myanmar started on the front foot against a Mongolia side who had beaten them 1-0 in September.

The home side's early pressure paid off as midfielder Hlaing Bo Bo gave them the lead in the 17th minute.

Mongolia, whose own campaign had seen them suffer three consecutive defeats after the win over Myanmar, struggled to make inroads as they went into the half time break trailing.

Myanmar continued to control the game in the second half but couldn't add to the scoreline but, more importantly, kept a clean sheet to clinch the three points.

Next up for Myanmar will be unbeaten group leaders Japan away on March 26 while Mongolia will host Tajikistan on the same day.
