Philippines bring Eriksson on board

Manila: The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has hired former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson to take charge of the national team for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 and 2018 AFF Cup.

Swede Eriksson will work alongside Scott Cooper, who handled the Azkals in their previous two matches. Eriksson and Cooper worked together at English club Leicester City in 2010-2011.

Azkals manager Dan Palami told Philippines media that Eriksson, who managed England in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, has signed a six-month contract with the PFF.

“We’re very excited to have Sven on board,” said Palami. “With his reputation, experience and knowledge, there’s no question he can help the team reach the next level."

Eriksson, who has previously coached in Italy, Portugal, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and China PR, met the Philippines squad during their recent training camp in Doha, Qatar.

The Phillipines, who will be making their Finals debut in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019, are in Group C alongside Korea Republic, China PR and Kyrgyz Republic for the January 5-February 1 Continental showpiece.
