Syafiq relishing Vietnam showdown
Kuala Lumpur: Syafia Ahmad is enjoying a rich vein of form and the Malaysian can't wait to take on Vietnam in their Asian Qualifiers Group G match in Hanoi on Thursday.
Syafiq scored a hat-trick in Malaysia's 6-0 win over Sri Lanka in an international friendly on Saturday, taking his overall tally to eight goals since making his international debut in 2017 against DPR Korea.
Syafiq’s impressive showing at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium followed goals against Indonesia and United Arab Emirates in the Asian Qualifiers and the attacking midfielder is sure to start against Vietnam.

“We managed to record our sixth win this year by playing really good football. The result has given us a boost in confidence ahead of the Vietnam match,” said Syafiq to local media.
“I am playing my best football since returning from injury. I want to maintain this form."
Syafiq suffered a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury in June during the first round of the Asian Qualifiers against Timor Leste, which kept him out for two weeks.
“It was a good team performance against Sri Lanka. Against Vietnam, we have to produce more than we did against Sri Lanka. We need to be consistent and maintain a strong character when we play Vietnam in Hanoi.”
The 24-year-old, who plys his trade with Johor Darul Ta’zim, was also effective in creating goals as shown in the 17th minute when he assisted veteran striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha to score from close range.
Malaysia are third in Group G, having won their opener against Indonesia 3-2 before falling 2-1 to UAE.
Malaysia will be hoping to bounce back against Park Hang-seo's Vietnam, who settled for a 0-0 stalemate against Thailand on Matchday One.
