UAE check in for final phase of training ahead of Asian Qualifiers

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates squad reported for training on Saturday for the Asian Qualifiers, with head coach Bert van Marwijk having whittled down his final squad

Fourth in Group G of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023, UAE face four matches in 13 days to round off the second round of qualification, beginning with Malaysia on June 3.

They then take on Thailand on June 7, Indonesia four days later and group leaders Vietnam on June 15.

The eight group winners and four best second-placed teams - five if Qatar finish top of Group E - will advance to the third round of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which will also seal them a seat in the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Finals.

Those who don't advance to the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers still have a chance at AFC Asian Cup China 2023 qualification.

UAE, who will host Group E, are on six points - five behind Vietnam but with a match in hand.

Van Marwijk, in his second stint as UAE head coach, will get a chance to assess the players when they play Jordan in a friendly on May 24.
