UAE's Caneda misses Serbia training stint after testing positive for COVID-19

Dubai: Caio Caneda will miss the United Arab Emirates' training stint in Serbia after testing positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The Al Ain forward, who recently received his UAE citizenship, said on social media that he had been in isolation and was feeling healthy, but had been awaiting a negative test before linking up with the squad.

“Hello, guys! First of all, thank you so much for all the messages and all the love I’ve been receiving on social media all these days. I’ve been isolated 17 days already with Covid-19.

“Just want to let all my fans and friends know that I’m feeling great, feeling healthy, and ready to come back as soon as possible," said Caneda on Instagram.

Caneda was one of three naturalised players called up by UAE head coach Jorge Luis Pinto for centralised training ahead of the resumption of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023, with Argentine Sebastian Tagliabue and Brazilian Fabio Virginio de Lima making the trip to Serbia.

Also out of the three-week training stint are Sharjah goalkeeper Adel Al Hossani, Shabab Al Ahli Dubai defender Mohammad Marzooq and Al Wasl defender Ali Salmeen, with all three nursing injuries.

Colombian Pinto has called up Al Dhafra goalkeeper Khalid Al Senani, Al Wahda defender Fares Juma and midfielder Khalil Ebrahim and Sharjah midfielder Khalid Bawazir as replacements with UAE leaving for Serbia on Wednesday.

Pinto, who steered Costa Rica to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014, is tasked with reviving UAE's Asian Qualifiers campaign with the West Asians currently fourth in Group G on six points with four matches remaining.

They face Malaysia at home on October 8 before travelling to play Indonesia five days later. Their final two matches are at home to Thailand and Vietnam on November 12 and 17 respectively.
