Group E: Johor Darul Ta'zim (MAS) 1-1 Gyeongnam FC (KOR)

Johor Bahru: Diogo's 68th spot-kick gave Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim their first ever AFC Champions League point when they came from behind to hold Gyeongnam FC of Korea Republic 1-1 in a Group E tie on Tuesday.

JDT’s Safawi Rasid forced an early save from Lee Bum-soo as his curling shot threatened to sneak in at the far post.

Diogo Luis Santo must have impressed the watching Ronaldo with an audacious attempt in the 24th minute. After a flowing move, the ball made its way to S. Kunanlan on the right and his cross was met with an overhead kick that flew just over.

Another Safawi shot was beaten out by Lee Bum-soo two minutes later as the hosts piled on the pressure.

But the visitors almost took the lead just before half-time. Lee Yeong-jae’s corner from the left found Kwak Tae-hi unmarked but the defender headed over.

Gyeongnam raised their game at the start of the second half and Izham Tarmizi was quick off his line to deny Kim Seun-jun after a through ball from Luc Castaignos.

In the 52nd minute, the Koreans took the lead as another Lee Yeong-jae corner was met by Kwak Tae-hi and this time the centre-back’s header found the net.

JDT hit back and Maurico missed a great chance in the 63rd minute when he headed Safawi’s free-kick wide and Diogo then had Lee Bum-soo at full stretch to tip his shot over.

The home side were handed the opportunity to level when Song Ju-hun’s handball resulted in a penalty. Diogo placed his spot-kick down the middle to make It 1-1 with 22 minutes remaining.

JDT were inches from going ahead twice in the 72ndminute. Safawi’s low shot from the edge of the area came off the post and the rebound fell to Gonzalo Cabrera whose close-range effort struck the bar.

But Gyeongnam weren’t finished and Negueba’s one-two with Kim Seung-jun carved open the home defence before the Brazilian sent his shot high and wide.

There was agony for JDT with three minutes remaining when Diogo headed onto the bar and a minute later Safawi was clean through but Lee Bum-soo saved again.

There is now a break of four weeks before JDT try and earn their first win of the campaign when they take on Shandong Luneng in China. Gyeongnam will also be seeking their first victory when they host group leaders Kashima Antlers.
