Riyadh: The 2019 AFC Champions League quarter-finals kick off on Monday with four heated encounters, but none is as historically significant as the all-Saudi clash between Al Ittihad and Al Hilal.
With nine Continental trophies and 23 Saudi League titles between them, Al Hilal and Al Ittihad are Saudi Arabia’s most successful teams and two of Asia’s greatest sides, but only one of them will make it to the last four of the 2019 AFC Champions League.
Al Hilal have reached the semi-finals three times in the past five years, while time has not been kind to two-time AFC Champions League winners Al Ittihad, whose last semi-final appearance dates back to 2012 when they lost to city rivals Al Ahli.

Kuala Lumpur: After eliminating Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the Round of 16 to avenge a bitter defeat three years ago, Wang Shenchao believes fate has delivered another opportunity for vengeance for Shanghai SIPG after the Chinese Super League champions were drawn to face Urawa Red Diamonds in the quarter-finals of the 2019 AFC Champions League.
Vitor Pereira’s side exorcised their Jeonbuk demons in June with a penalty shootout win over the two-time AFC Champions League winners as Shanghai banished the painful memories of the 5-0 aggregate loss inflicted upon them by the club from Korea Republic in the 2016 edition of the Continental championship.
And now SIPG captain Wang is anticipating the opportunity for further retribution against an Urawa side that curtailed the club’s AFC Champions League ambitions in the semi-finals of the 2017 edition when the teams meet in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Doha: Al Sadd SC’s Nam Tae-hee is set to miss Monday’s AFC Champions League quarter-final showdown with Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al Nassr through injury.
The 28-year-old Korea Republic international has been ruled out of the first-leg encounter at Riyadh’s King Fahd International Stadium after damaging a muscle in his left leg during the Qatari club’s Sheikh Jassim Cup win over domestic rivals Al Duhail SC on August 17.
