On February 11, Ulsan Hyundai and FC Tokyo opened the group with a 1-1 draw at Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium on Matchday One.

Diego Oliveira had given the 2019 J1 League runners-up the lead 19 minutes into the second half only for his Brazilian compatriot Adailton to find the back of his own net to hand Kim Do-hoon’s side a point at the end of an entertaining 90 minutes.

A week later, the only other tie in the group was played as FC Tokyo were this time the beneficiaries of a late goal as a long-range effort from Leandro in the 82nd minute secured all three points at home to debutants Perth.

Since then, the teams have endured mixed form on their domestic fronts.

Ulsan missed out on both League and FA Cup titles, beaten to both by Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, while FC Tokyo have been unable to muster the same title challenge in Japan that saw them run Yokohama F. Marinos close in 2019.

For Shanghai Shenhua, the Chinese Super League side were able to progress to the 2020 championship rounds in the domestic competition, but they were eliminated by rivals Shanghai SIPG in a penalty shootout, before ultimately finishing in seventh place.

Perth, meanwhile, reached the last four of the Finals Series but were unable to return to the Grand Final, beaten for a second year in a row by eventual winners Sydney FC.
