ACL2020: Everything went according to plan, says Al Nassr's Al Obaid

Doha: Defender Abdulrahman Al Obaid said Al Nassr fully deserved their win against Islamic Republic of Iran's Sepahan FC in their 2020 AFC Champions League Group D tie on Tuesday.

A brace from Moroccan forward Abderazzaq Hamdallah steered the Saudi Arabia club to their second win as they stayed unbeaten to go top of the group.

Al Obaid said Al Nassr's ability to control the match helped them seal the hugely important win.

“In such matches it is very important to collect the three points,” said the 27-year-old Al Obaid. “The format of the competition requires us to play every three days and this means we must save our strength.

“This is what we did today as we took the lead in the first half and slowed things down in the second period. The most important thing is that we got the victory.”

Group D - MD3: Sepahan 0-2 Al Nassr

With no time to rest, Al Obaid said Al Nassr will start preparing for the reverse fixture against Sepahan on Friday where another win will boost their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.

“We are approaching the competition with a certain strategy as we think of each match separately,” he said. “This match is now over and we should prepare for the next in order to get another victory.”

Sepahan forward Muhsen Al Ghassani (pictured above, right) said his side must recover from the defeat as they still have a chance of advancing to the knockout stage.

“We tried our best but we faced a strong team,” said the 23-year-old Omani striker. “We created some chances but Al Nassr scored two goals and held on for the win."

“Despite the defeat, we still have a chance and we must forget this result . We have to fix the mistakes that we made and recover with a win in the next match.”

The defeat meant Sepahan remained on three points while Al Nassr are on seven with Qatar's Al Sadd in second on five points after their 3-3 draw with UAE's Al Ain on Tuesday.
