ACL2020: Al Taawoun appoint Carteron as head coach

Doha: Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawoun FC have announced the appointment of Frenchman Patrice Carteron as their new head coach ahead of Matchday Four of the 2020 AFC Champions League.

The reigning Saudi King’s Cup champions are currently top of Group C with six points from three matches, having lost their last match to Persepolis 1-0 on Tuesday. They face the Islamic Republic of Iran side again on Friday.

Carteron, 50, had resigned from his post as head coach of Egyptian giants Zamalek SC after just nine months in charge. In his short spell in Cairo Carteron led Zamalek to the 2020 Egyptian Super Cup and CAF Super Cup titles while also guiding them to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

The Frenchman is already a Champions League winner in Africa, having led TP Mazembe to the CAF Champions League title in 2015. He also has previous experience in Saudi football, having coached Al Nassr in 2017.

Caretaker coach Abdullah Aseeri had been in charge of the Buraydah-based side following the departure of Vitor Campelos in August as the club struggled to find form in the Saudi Pro League, finding themselves in the midst of a relegation battle, only to survive on the final day of the season.

Al Taawoun’s new head coach is expected to arrive in Doha within the next couple of days to lead the club in the rest of their AFC Champions League campaign.
